URSS 1957 vs. Russia 2022: A Comparison of Propaganda and Weaponry

Balance the ideas of Russian propaganda today with those from 65 years ago. Satan 2 (Sarmat) vs. the first intercontinental ballistic missile built by the Soviets. Not only do the ideas sound the same, but the words too: enemies will be annihilated in minutes, they won’t have time to make any decisions, the missiles fly so fast they cannot be intercepted, and a nuclear strike is needed for “peace and progress.” The more destructive the newly invented weapon, the greater the victory of the forces of peace.

Unfortunately, this war is not just about freedom vs. dictatorship or a fight to save Western values threatened by an Asian-style neo-totalitarianism. It is a battle with our own past, one that we have never analyzed or overcome, resulting in the repetition of the same mistakes and the admiration, even in the age of social media, of the same ideologies and types of leaders who led us into the darkness of the Second World War. Those who proclaimed the end of history after the fall of communism had no idea they were idealizing a hiatus that could not sustain peace. From all the Russian propaganda, we should only remember this: peace is like silence, the longer it lasts, the heavier it becomes.

“Successful experimentation in the USSR with the intercontinental ballistic missile represents a huge victory for the forces of peace. Carrying such terrible weapons as the hydrogen bomb, these intercontinental ballistic missiles can be sent in an instant to the farthest regions of the globe. Almost 20 times faster than sound, flying at altitudes 100 times higher than the most advanced airplane, and reaching distances of over 8,000 km, these giant projectiles, each weighing more than 300,000 kg, are today the most powerful means of defense for the peaceful world against any aggressor. The intercontinental ballistic missile is impossible to intercept. It’s nearly 7 km per second speed gives a warning station, detecting the missile 300 km away from its target, less than a minute to take countermeasures. In such a short time, no means of defense, no matter how advanced, can carry out the operations of receiving commands, launching, and guiding for interception. In a potential war, territories once considered inaccessible due to their geographic distance will be as vulnerable as military bases in the neighboring country of the attacked nation. Those who have previously believed that by unleashing a new war, they will reap the benefits under the cover of distance, are now in a situation to reflect on whether, with their own skin at stake, it would be better to become realists and accept the aspirations of people to live in peace.

As Marshal K.A. Vershinin, the supreme commander of the Soviet Air Force, recently declared, the Soviet Union possesses powerful means of defense that can deliver devastating blows to the aggressors, so powerful and extensive that they can destroy all military bases surrounding it. It is time for those governments that have allowed the construction of foreign military bases on their territories to consider whether the situation in which they have been lured by their “protectors” is as advantageous as it seemed.

Although powerful and well-armed, the Soviet Union is fighting resolutely for the liberation of humanity from fear and insecurity, for using the principles of these destructive weapons for peace and progress. By continuously developing and perfecting massive vehicles built on the principle of intercontinental ballistic missiles, Soviet scientists make a valuable contribution to the development of contemporary science and technology” (Flacăra – Magazine of Communist Propaganda in Romania, September 26, 1957).
